Are you opposed to what Michelle Wie has done biggin?
absolutely
im opposed to sending kids to tennis camps for small kids, the golf camps etc..
Honestly, once kids get to the point that they learn basic skills I think they should go do what they want to do. Teach them to read, write, do math, a little history, understand a little bit of science and send them to their desired field of study. If you want to go to college stay in school, if not go to vocational school, play baseball, etc.
i can see your point, but ive always thought that kids should have to at least finish HS
it pains me to see the ignorance in this country we already have, i dont want to see more lol
i just think those kids are setting a bad example, because now every kid whos parents think is an all-world player will quit HS and follow the harper path
I think our biggest problem is that many people don't have specialized skills. A wise man once told me to be guaranteed of keeping your job you must make your self in-dispensable, and I firmly agree with that. If we send kids to vocational training in the 9th grade they will have specialized skills. Other countries do this and they are passing us up. This and the fact that not enough of our population goes on to get a college degree are our biggest problems. To me, you have to do one or the other. Bryce Harper has a special talent, just like many are blessed with great intelligence, yet you are asking him to hold back his skills while we push those with great intelligence through high school, college, and graduate school as quickly as possible so they can benefit our society. Why should we hold Harper back, he can't help that his skill is hitting a baseball 500 ft.
the kids who are fast-tracked still stay in school and graduate high school
i agree about the skills, but we dont let great mechanics or great basket weavers leave school early to make baskets or fix cars
why should we let baseball players just because they can make more money?
and i do object to the sending kids to college at 14 bit
pvfan, we went to school together, both of us were very intelligent;
if your parents would have tried to fast track you, would have you been mature enough to handle college and the real world at 14?
i know i wouldnt.
i think kids these days are so immature and driven by shortcuts, we shouldnt encourage more of that.
I'm not sure I'm mature enough to handle it now. I take responsibility for my short comings, but I don't think I was challenged enough in high school. I never did homework, the only subject that really interested me in high school was history/government. The requirements in those classes were a breeze, my final year of high school they sent me to MECC to take two semesters of government. I signed up for an astronomy class at the school taught online, the class was at the same time as my government class at MECC. The professor just required me to come in on days when there was something due, and e-mailed me my assignments. We ended up just doing one assignment, my final exam in that class was to give an oral presentation on the effects of the pornographic film industry on America. (no joke, true story) I'll be the first to admit when I first went to UVa-Wise I didn't do my best, but I was in shell shock to a degree. I honestly thought I just had to go to my history class and I was smart enough to make an A. Mark Clark taught me in about two weeks that wasn't the case.
haha you are preaching to the choir
i flunked out of uva wise because i had no study methods whatsoever, and just assumed college was as easy as HS was.
its sad that our education system fails so hard, but kids should at least have to try like we did lol
To be honest, I was at UVa-Wise two years before I really felt like I could succeed. I really don't think a lot of people in this area take UVa-Wise as seriously as it should be taken. I think the average high school g.p.a. of incoming freshman is something like 3.5 now, and we have nationally ranked public high schools in this state. I've talked to people in some classes about our local schools and they just laugh at what is not offered here.
